Oxfordfirst - Foundation Postgraduate Studies
To enter a UK university to study a Masters programme you need a first degree, or equivalent, and to satisfy the English language requirement.
There are several circumstances where you may need a bridge or Foundation before taking a Masters programme. In many countries, the postgraduate programme lasts two years. In the UK it is normally just one year long. You need to be absolutely ready in terms of your knowledge, study skills and English language level before you start. A Foundation could be what you need. Of course, your personal circumstances will determine what you need for preparation and be aware that programmes can last from a full year to just a few months.
Some people use a postgraduate programme as a means to change direction in their academic studies. For example, some IT and Engineering graduates want to move across to a more business-oriented field. This even applies to the MBA. Most MBA courses require a solid business background, both academic and in terms of work experience; however, there are some that will accept students who do not have this background. Such students should seriously consider taking a postgraduate foundation course.
Some graduates from overseas are knowledgeable in their field of study but do not have sufficient English language skills to take a Masters programme straight away. They have several options; they could take a general English language course, even take an EAP (English for Academic Purposes) course but perhaps the best route is to take a course where English and study skills are taught along with some units appropriate to the field they are going to study.
