Oxfordfirst - Learning English
I teach English language to international students in many different contexts:
- First, I have students who stay in my home and have lessons. These can be from beginners to advanced - this is part of a homestay programme - more details can be found on my other website here.
- Second, I give lessons to students who live in Oxford (to contact me about private lessons use the contact information here),
- From time to time I teach English for different language schools in Oxford, ranging from closed groups like Japanese students visiting Oxford for a few weeks to groups of students preparing for English language examinations.
Homestay English
When you book a stay with Homestay Oxford you have the opportunity to learn and practise your English in a total immersion structure - everything you hear or see will be in English. Learning English in your teacher’s home, homestay private language tuition, is known to be the most effective an d efficient way to learn. You live and learn on a course specifically designed for your personal needs and interests, constantly practising your English language skills both formally in lessons and informally, for example, during dinner. Each day has its own set of lesson plans, drawn up by a well-qualified tutor with years of experience in teaching.
If you want to learn English in England then a homestay with English lessons can offer you a perfect environment. At the end of your homestay you should
(i) have greater fluency in speaking English, (ii) be more accurate in your listening, (iii) be more accurate in your grammar, (iv) have an enlarged vocabulary, and,(v) have developed a greater general confidence.
By living in the tutor’s home you have the opportunity to learn in a perfect learning environment. I will aim to get a good idea of your needs (needs assessment) before you arrive but will clarify them further once you start your homestay. The programme I develop will be to satisfy your individual needs but I will be flexible in my approach. Lessons will be tailored to your needs and take into account your level of English and the type of skills you wish to develop. I have a warm and enthusiastic approach and will use my wide teaching experience to help you make progress. I know that a friendly positive approach brings out the best in my students.
I offer a variety of programmes, General English, General English with British Cultural studies, Business/Professional English (with or without cultural studies), and examination preparation. Lessons are normally arranged for the morning and are structured to have separate parts covering different aspects and uses of language.
Business/Professional English
Business English has many meanings and I am happy to offer services for each one. Some people want to practice the skills involved in Business before taking a business course, making arrangements on the phone, reading business reports for information. Some want to use Business as a means of learning English so that all the contexts are in a Business environment. The focus is on learning English but the examples, contexts and vocabulary are deliberately concentrated on those used in Business.
A third aspect of Business English is that used by business professionals and is designed for those already working to improve their communication and English language skills in specific ways. I offer flexibility in this area designing each course to suit the individual learner with topics that are designed to be of immediate application by the learner in their work. Typical areas covered can be effective communications in meetings, being able to conduct negotiations, writing effective reports, proposals and formal business correspondence, delivering presentations, describing your company or business and effective telephoning and organisation. Other vitally important areas in which I can develop your skills are effective interviewing techniques for jobs (including brushing up your CV (résumé), marketing and public relations but of particular use on occasion is Social English so that you can handle social occasions more confidently including entertaining clients and business associates and for when you yourself travel on business.
