What is Study Abroad?

When Mark Twain was advising us to, 'Explore, Dream, Discover' he also warned us that, 'twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the things you did'.

Study Abroad means staying in another country for anything from a few weeks in the summer to a stay of a semester or even a full year taking a programme of studies that will gain you credits towards your award in your home institution. What you will encounter when you become a resident rather than purely a visitor, are the people, culture, and history in the new environment – it will sometime be difficult to communicate when you interact with local people, but that is just part of the  challenge.

Why Study Abroad?

Of course it provides a unique opportunity to learn about a country and region, their history and culture, in depth. But is has more! You will not only learn about people in a new environment, but it provides you with a fantastic opportunity to learn about yourself, your ideas and your place in the world.

As a famous novelist wrote, when you travel to distant places to discover new worlds, you will find that 'everything is the same, but everything is different'. And what she might also have said is that you are also likely to discover yourself!  You will meet challenges as you move out of your comfort zone but, almost certainly, your life will be richer for the experience.

Why Study Abroad in Oxford?

Whether it be a few weeks or up to a full year, there is perhaps nowhere better to spend it than Oxford. It has more history than most people can manage to imagine from pre-Roman to the time when Oxford was the place where Parliament was based and, of course, including the history of Oxford University which stretches over 800 years. It has a wealth of museum and art galleries including the oldest museum in the UK. But, beyond the history, Oxford is a very lively place with numerous places to eat, have a drink and generally enjoy yourself.

If you do feel you have seen enough of Oxford, then a trip to exciting London is very easy with two  companies running buses roughly every ten minutes; the journey taking around 90 minutes. There you will find a wealth of theatres and musical concerts as well as world-famous art galleries and a not to be missed trip down the Thames on a boat from Big Ben to Tower Bridge.
